Greek stocks end significantly higher‏

Greek stocks surged for the second successive session in the Athens Stock Exchange on Wednesday, boosted by strong buying interest for selected blue chip stocks, while bank shares remained under pressure pushing the sector index to new historic low levels.

The composite index of the market jumped 2.12 pct to end at 671.82 points, after falling as much as 0.70 pct early in the session.

The Large Cap index rose 2.37 pct and the Mid Cap index ended 0.84 pct higher. Turnover was a low 46.449 million euros in volume of 276,002,324.

Folli Follie (6.67 pct), Motor Oil (6.05 pct), PPC (4.85 pct) and Coca Cola HBC (3.45 pct) scored the biggest percentage gains of the day among blue chip stocks, while Piraeus Bank (19.44 pct), Eurobank (12.50 pct), Alpha Bank (4.69 pct) and National Bank (1.06 pct) suffered heavy losses.

Among market sectors, the Bank sector was the only one to end lower (-5.13 pct), while Chemicals (8.90 pct), Insurance (7.58 pct), Commerce (6.64 pct) and Oil (4.10 pct) scored big gains.

 

Broadly, advancers led decliners by 62 to 39 with another 18 issues unchanged. Altec (15.38 pct), ANEK (15.15 pct) and Lazaridis (9.63 pct) were top gainers, while Kreka (19.74 pct), Piraeus Bank (19.44 pct) and AEGEK (18.75 pct) were top losers.
